Real Madrid and Manchester United will play in the first leg of their Champions League tie played at the Santiago Bernabéu. Cristiano Ronaldo will play against Manchester United for the first time since leaving Old Trafford
Manchester United will play Real Madrid for the first time since that game in 2003, when a Ronaldo hat-trick earned a standing ovation from the home crowd at Old Trafford as it sent the hosts out despite a 4-3 victory.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson rested Rio Ferdinand at the weekend, with the experienced defender expected to come into the team alongside Nemanja Vidic in central defense. Michael Carrick will also start, while Danny Welbeck should be given the nod in a wider position in order to combat the pace of Madrid on the counter.
Real Madrid defender Pepe is fit after an ankle injury and is set to make his first start since December in the Champions League showdown against Manchester United on Wednesday.
Xabi Alonso (groin) and Raphael Varane (hamstring) are also available, but captain Iker Casillas is sidelined with a broken thumb.
Sami Khedira, Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil are all likely to return to the starting line-up after being rested during the weekend.
